Baia do Inferno

Baia do Inverno is an area on the southwest coast of Santiago, on the border between municipalities of Ribeira Grande and Santa Catarina - Santiago Island - Cabo Verde.

The Serra Malagueta park area is one of the most famous and legendary in the entire island of Santiago and Cape Verde. During a long walk you will have the opportunity to learn more about the fauna, flora, history, volcanic formation of the island. A forest area protected with some escarpments where the presence of endemisms is significant.

The area contains the largest number of endemic plants on the island of Santiago, 14 of which are classified as threatened in Cape Verde's red list.

The Rebeira Grande trail is interesting because of its historical locations. The journey begins in a small town Calebaceira north of Cidade Velha. Thru the valley you will encounter numerous farms with sugar cane, banana and other vegetables. Also on the way you will pass by several distilleries of Grouge "rum", numerous baobab trees and amazing rock textures. Finally you will reach the old city where you encounter the first street name "Rua da Banana" and the church of Nossa Sehnora Rosario, one of the first church in Catholic Church in West of Africa.

Located in the middle of the island, with a magnificent view, offering an exceptional panorama of island, Pico d'António is the highest mountain on the island of Santiago, with 1394 meters of altitude. Of volcanic origin and with a topography where strong slopes predominate, the island of Santiago is subject to the adverse characteristics of endogenous factors, tributaries of fragility of the natural environment.
